State, Counties Update Operational Condition Levels

Prior to the start of the 2019 Hurricane Season, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, in coordination with county emergency management officials, is updating the state’s emergency operational condition levels, or OPCONs. Now, agencies will coordinate, prepare and respond to major emergencies based on three levels of readiness instead of five.

Local Wireless Emergency Alert Test on April 2

Residents within approximately ten miles of the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station should expect a Wireless Emergency Alert System test on their mobile devices on Tuesday, April 2 at 1 p.m. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division will conduct this test as part of Dominion Energy’s annual live, audible siren test for the nuclear power plant.

Statewide Tornado Drill
March 13, 2019
The drill will be conducted Wednesday, March 13, at 9 a.m. Public schools, state and local Emergency Management, the South Carolina Broadcasters Association, and others will participate in this annual event. The purpose of the drill is to test communication systems, safety procedures, mitigation processes, etc.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service jointly sponsor the week to remind people that severe storms, tornadoes and flash floods are significant hazards in South Carolina and people need to take proper safety precautions.

SCEMD accepting applications for new Citizen’s Academy

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division is accepting applications for our new Citizen’s Academy, where community members are given a hands-on opportunity to learn about the state agency responsible for coordinating the preparation for, the response to and the recovery from major disasters in South Carolina.

SCEMD achieves national reaccreditation

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division has been granted full, national accreditation by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program. This national certification program examined the state’s ability to respond to and prepare for disasters. SCEMD was first accredited in 2008 and reaccredited in 2013.
